Through the activities of its Advocacy and Governmental Affairs Committee and the services of Ewald Consulting (a lobbying firm engaged by MNSHA), MNSHA pursues change in legislation that will positively impact the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology.
The Advocacy and Governmental Affairs Committee directs the activities of MNSHA’s lobbying firm, coordinates communication to the membership regarding legislative trends and proposals and facilitates grassroots lobbying efforts from the membership.
Ewald Consulting identifies key issues and legislators, drafts bills and obtains legislative authors, promotes the passage of bills or amendments as directed by MNSHA, opposes legislation detrimental to the interests of MNSHA, makes presentations and assists with presentations of testimony, arranges meetings with legislators, helps train MNSHA members on effective ways to influence legislation, and monitors and reports on legislative, regulatory and other governmental activity throughout the year.
The goals of the Advocacy and Governmental Affairs Committee are to:
- Minimize and provide opposition to any proposed cuts in eligibility benefit sets, provider rate reimbursement and elimination of services as they relate to Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology services for enrollees in MN MHCP programs.
- Guard against amendments to the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology practices act.
- Collaborate with MAA, MOTA, MPTA, MACE, the MN Commission Servicing the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and other stakeholder organizations on potential legislation.
- Monitor and respond to emerging legislation from state agencies and other organizations that potentially impact the provision of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology services and the clients whom we serve.
