The ASHA Code of Ethics reflects professional values and expectations for scientific and clinical practice. Initially formalized in 1952, the code has continued to be modified and adapted for the current state of practice and to address evolving issues within the professions.ASHA’s 2023 Principles of Ethics include:
- Individuals shall honor their responsibility to hold paramount the welfare of persons they serve professionally or who are participants in research and scholarly activities.
- Individuals shall honor their responsibility to achieve and maintain the highest level of professional competence and performance.
- In their professional role, individuals shall act with honesty and integrity when engaging with the public and shall provide accurate information involving any aspect of the professions.
- Individuals shall uphold the dignity and autonomy of the professions, maintain collaborative and harmonious interprofessional and intraprofessional relationships, and accept the professions’ self imposed standards. (Code of Ethics (2023). 2023 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association)
With the above principles in mind, becoming a culturally responsive clinician has become increasingly important as we work to provide service, education and research that is inclusive of an increasing array of diverse populations, in addition to diversifying the composition of our members and affiliates.
This session will introduce you to our history and the current potential bias present when working with underrepresented and culturally diverse populations. Attendees will also be provided with recommendations and tools that can be implemented immediately to provide and model best practices of cultural humility when working with underrepresented and culturally diverse patients/clients, students and colleagues.
We will then continue with a panel discussion and question and answer time.
