On Saturday, October 10, MNSHA is hosted a 1-day event to provide the opportunity to learn about trauma and its impacts on our clients, how to do virtual interventions for special education, continue working through anti-bias training and pick up some new skills for virtual therapy sessions. These sessions were recorded and are now available for replay until October 9, 2021.

Anti-Bias Speech-Language-Hearing Practices for Children, Their Families, and Ourselves | 90 Minutes

Abstract:
Maya Angelou stated, “Equal rights, fair play, justice are all like air; we all have it, or none of us has it.” All children have the right to equitable learning opportunities that help them develop to their fullest potential. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists can take an active role in ensuring children receive equitable learning opportunities by combining evidence-based practices of our professions with evidence-based practices of anti-bias education. This session will describe key anti-bias speech-language pathology and audiology practices that show children, their families, and our colleagues that we stand fairness, justice, and kindness. These practices can be implemented in both medical and educational settings. Engaging in anti-bias speech-language-hearing practice is both an individual and collective process, and we will use this session to further build the community of anti-bias SLPs and AUDs in MN. Join us on this individual and collective journey!Learner Outcomes:
- Describe how discipline-specific EBPs can interact with anti-bias education EBPs in ways that promote fairness, justice, and kindness.
- Identify several discipline-specific EBPs that promote equity, and share their own information and ideas for advancing equity in speech-language-hearing professions.
- Formulate a shared vision for sustaining anti-bias speech-language pathology and audiology practices in MN.
Time-Ordered Agenda:
- 30 minutes – Describing the foundations of anti-bias education
- 45 minutes – Describing tools/resources professionals can use to examine whether their professional EBPs are consistent with anti-bias practice, and if not consistent, how professional EBPs may be altered to increase equity
- 15 minutes – Creating a shared vision for sustaining anti-bias speech-language pathology and audiology practices in MN

Jill Rentmeester Disher, PhD, CCC-SLP (she/her/hers) is the Manager of Speech-Language Pathology Services in Minneapolis Public Schools. Abstract:
Multi Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is used across schools in Minnesota and includes universal screening, high-quality instruction, interventions matched to student need, frequent progress monitoring, and examining data to make educational decisions. This session will focus on providing the SLP with ideas for facilitating the selection of screening measures, services, and supports in the MTSS framework (RtI). Additionally, as part of the MTSS process it is important to have collaborative teams that can explain screening and progress assessment results with families.Learner Outcomes:
- Identify the elements of a strong MTSS framework.
- Identify screening measures for three common referrals.
- Identify interventions for three common referrals.

Presenter Bio: Stephanie Bordewick, MS, CCC-SLP has been an SLP in the educational setting for the past 12 years. She is the current VP of Education for the Minnesota Speech Language Hearing Committee and has chaired the School Issues Committee for the past four years. Stephanie loves being an SLP, her three cats, playing games, camping, and outfits.

Abstract:
Shanda is looking forward to sharing her experiences with online speech therapy. She hopes to provide the listeners with ideas and resources when providing on-line speech and language therapy while sharing her “Top Ten Virtual Speech and Language Resources List.” Shanda would also be available to help contribute with the panel tips on assessment, intervention, IEP meetings, additional treatment resources, paperwork requirements and working with paraprofessional assistants during on-line therapy sessions.Katie will share a step-by-step process to convert in-person therapy materials to digital friendly materials to be used during distance learning days. She will give Bps on how to organize materials in a digital format to help online speech sessions run smoothly. She will provide listeners with a mock therapy session demonstrating converted therapy materials.
Learner Outcomes: Participants will:
- Identify at least three new virtual resources to use during synchronous teletherapy/distance learning.
- Identify at least three new virtual resources to use during asynchronous teletherapy/distance learning.
- Experiment with one new virtual skill for teletherapy.

Presenter Bio:
Shanda Gaunt, MS, CCC-SLP/L graduated with honors from the University of WS-Stevens Point, with a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 1997. Shanda has held her Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) for more than 22 years, has served as a lead in several speech therapy departments, and has given back to her profession by supervising numerous graduate level speech therapy students. Shanda has contributed to her profession by being a member of The American Speech Language Association (ASHA), serving on various committees for the Minnesota Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (MSHF), Twin Cities Speech-Language Pathologists (TCSLP) and within the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute organization.Shanda has gained clinical experience in a variety of educational and clinical settings. Presently, she enjoys the diversity of being able to utilize her assessment and treatment skills for children and adults by working at both Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in an outpatient rehabilitation clinical setting and within the public school setting due to her 9-year working relationship with Speech Partners, which is an exceptional company dedicated to providing online speech services to schools in Minnesota and in the upper Midwest.
Shanda has had the opportunity to professionally work with both children and adults in the areas of developmental delays, Down Syndrome, Autism, Apraxia, Language-Based Literacy Disorders, Fluency Disorders, Articulation/Phonological Disorders, voice, Dysarthria, Dysphagia, Aphasia, Neurocognitive Disorders (attention, memory, executive functioning, problem solving), and Augmentative-Alternative Communication Systems. She is especially specialized in the treatment for the apraxia of speech and is a certified PROMPT clinician that utilizes a tactile-kinesthetic approach to help advance a person’s ability to talk. She is also trained in basic sign language, and The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), which is an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system. Shanda’s years of treatment experience resulted in the compilation of an extremely useful apraxia resource for treating childhood apraxia of speech called, “Say & Do®” Apraxia Fun Sheets. This treatment resource was published by Super Duper Publications in September of 2014.

Katie Zenke, MS, CCC-SLP graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire with a Masters of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2015. Katie holds her Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology. She has gained clinical experience in both educational and clinical settings working with all ages, birth to geriatric. She began working in the school district last year, for the 2019-2020 school year. Katie enjoys spending time with her husband and 19-month-old son, reading, and walking outside (when it is warm!).
